• Common Name: Helmet Snail (also called Dusky Nerite or Black Nerite)
• Adult Size: 2.5–3.5 cm (1–1.4 inches)
• Life Expectancy: 1 to 2 years in captivity (possibly longer in ideal conditions)

• Habitat: Found in fast-flowing rivers and streams in Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of East Africa. Typically inhabits rocky or sandy bottoms and feeds on algae growing on submerged surfaces.

• Ideal Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)
• pH Range: 6.5–8.0
• Water Hardness: 6–18 dGH (moderate to hard water preferred to maintain shell health)
• Temperament: Very peaceful. Helmet snails are solitary and non-aggressive, making them ideal for community tanks. They do not harm plants or tank mates.

Diet & Nutrition

• Omnivorous: Primarily herbivorous in behavior.

  • The main diet consists of algae and biofilm growing on glass, rocks, and plants
  • Supplement with algae wafers, blanched vegetables (like spinach or zucchini), and commercial snail food if algae are scarce
  • Avoid overfeeding protein-rich foods as it can affect shell health

Appearance

• Shell: Thick, rounded shell shaped like a helmet, typically dark brown to black in color with faint ridges or subtle striping
• Body: Grey to black body with a muscular foot for clinging to surfaces in high current
• Operculum: Possesses a hard "trapdoor" (operculum) to seal itself inside the shell when threatened

Distinctive Features

• Excellent Algae Eater: Efficient at cleaning algae from hard surfaces without damaging plants
• Cannot reproduce in Freshwater: While they may lay eggs, larvae require brackish or saltwater to hatch, preventing overpopulation in freshwater tanks
• Hardy but Sensitive to Copper: Like most invertebrates, they are highly sensitive to copper-based medications or water treatments
