Origin

• South America
• Upper Rio Negro region (Brazil)
• Found in soft, acidic blackwater streams

Appearance

• Creamy white to pale orange body
• Bold black band covering eyes (“mask”)
• Black patch near dorsal fin
• Short, armored body with barbels
• Size: 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches)

Temperament

• Very peaceful and social
• Strong schooling fish (keep 6+ minimum, 8–12 ideal)
• Bottom-dwelling scavenger
• Excellent community tank fish

Good tank mates:

• Neon Tetras
• Rasboras
• Small Gouramis
• Other Corydoras species
• Shrimp (generally safe)

Tank Requirements

Minimum Tank Size

• 15–20 gallons (bigger is better for groups)

Water Parameters

• Temperature: 22–26°C
• pH: 5.5–7.0
• Soft, acidic water preferred

Tank Setup

• Fine sand substrate (very important for barbels)
• Driftwood + leaf litter (blackwater style)
• Gentle filtration
• Plenty of hiding spots
