🌱 Care Notes

  • Leaf Texture & Appearance: Ludwigia sp. (Super Red) is a striking plant known for its vibrant red coloration, especially when grown under optimal lighting and CO₂ conditions. The plant has elongated, lance-shaped leaves that turn a deep red to reddish-orange hue at the tips, and with proper care, the entire plant can exhibit these brilliant colors. Its bright appearance makes it a standout in the aquascape.

  • Placement: Ideal for the background or midground of an aquascape. It has an upright growth habit, creating a colorful vertical element. It works well as a colorful focal point or as a background plant when grown taller.

  • Water Conditions: Prefers soft to moderately hard water with a temperature range of 22–28°C (72–82°F). The plant thrives in stable water conditions and will grow best when water quality is consistently maintained.

  • Lighting: Requires high light to bring out its full red coloration. With lower light, the plant may remain more green, which is still attractive but lacks the signature red hues. Bright, intense lighting will help the plant develop its compact form and vibrant colors.

  • CO₂: Highly recommended. This plant responds well to CO₂ supplementation, and it significantly enhances growth, health, and coloration. With CO₂, it will grow faster, and its red tones will be more pronounced. It can survive without CO₂ but will be much less vibrant and slower growing.

  • Fertilization: Regular liquid fertilization with a focus on micronutrients (especially iron) is beneficial. Root tabs can also be used in the substrate for additional nutrients to encourage strong root growth. Providing balanced nutrients is essential for maintaining the red coloration.

  • Propagation: Ludwigia sp. (Super Red) propagates easily through stem cuttings. Simply cut the top part of the healthy stem, replant it in the substrate, and it will root and start growing a new plant. Side shoots or runners will also form from the base, making it easy to propagate.

  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast. This plant can grow quickly under the right conditions, filling in space and creating a bold visual impact. If left unchecked, it may require regular pruning to keep its growth under control and maintain its desired shape and size.
