🌱 Care Notes
- Leaf Texture & Appearance: Rotala macrandra is famous for its broad, rounded leaves with brilliant red to pink coloration under ideal conditions. The leaves are delicate and soft, giving it a flowing, lush appearance. It is one of the most striking red plants in the aquarium hobby.
- Placement: Best used in the background or as a focal point in the midground of larger aquariums. Due to its vivid color, it works especially well in Dutch-style layouts for color contrast and layering.
- Water Conditions: Prefers soft, acidic water. Ideal temperature range: 22–28°C (72–82°F). Unstable water conditions may cause melting or leaf drop.
- Lighting: High-intensity lighting is essential to maintain the deep red hues and compact form. Under low light, it will lose color and become leggy.
- CO₂: Mandatory. CO₂ injection is crucial for healthy growth and vibrant coloration. Without CO₂, Rotala macrandra will quickly decline.
- Fertilization: Requires a rich nutrient environment, especially high iron, phosphate, and micronutrients. A nutrient-deficient tank will lead to poor color and weak stems.
- Propagation: Easily propagated via stem cuttings. Replant cut tops or side shoots into the substrate. Frequent trimming encourages bushy growth.
- Growth Rate: Moderate, though faster under high-tech conditions. Needs regular maintenance to prevent shading and to maintain its shape.
