• Habitat: Endemic to Lake Malawi, Africa; found in sandy-bottom habitats near rocky outcrops where they feed on invertebrates hidden in the substrate

Tank Requirements

• Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons (208 liters) for a single male with several females or a small group
• Ideal Temperature: 76°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C)
• pH Range: 7.8 to 8.6 (alkaline)
• Water Hardness: 10 to 25 dGH
• Temperament: Semi-aggressive; males can be territorial, especially during breeding. Best kept in a harem setup (1 male to 3–4 females) or in an all-male tank to avoid aggression over females.

  The natural diet consists of small invertebrates. In the aquarium:

  • High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes
  • Occasional frozen/live foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia)
  • Avoid high-protein "meaty" foods too frequently to prevent Malawi bloat

Appearance

• Coloration: Extremely vibrant and varied — blues, reds, yellows, oranges, purples; males are far more colorful than females
• Sexual Dimorphism: Males are bright and flashy; females are usually silver or brownish-gray
• Body Shape: Oval-bodied, with graceful fins and a slightly upturned mouth for foraging
