Diet & Nutrition
-
Omnivorous: Yes
The natural diet consists of small invertebrates. In the aquarium:- High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes
- Occasional frozen/live foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia)
- Avoid high-protein "meaty" foods too frequently to prevent Malawi bloat
Appearance
- Coloration: Extremely vibrant and varied — blues, reds, yellows, oranges, purples; males are far more colorful than females
- Sexual Dimorphism: Males are bright and flashy; females are usually silver or brownish-gray
- Body Shape: Oval-bodied, with graceful fins and a slightly upturned mouth for foraging
Distinctive Features
- Known for their brilliant coloration and relatively peaceful nature (for African cichlids)
- Intelligent, with interactive behavior toward keepers
- Sift sand while hunting, so a soft sand substrate is ideal
- Not rock-dwellers like Mbuna, but enjoy caves and open sandy areas
- Can be mixed with other peaceful Lake Malawi species if size and aggression levels are matched
