• Common Name: Axolotl / Mexican Walking Fish
• Adult Size: 23–30 cm (9–12 inches)
• Life Expectancy: 10–15 years (up to 20 years in optimal conditions)
• Habitat: Native to the ancient lake system of Xochimilco and Chalco in Mexico City. Prefers cool, still, freshwater environments with soft substrates and ample hiding spaces among rocks and plants.

Tank Requirements

• Minimum Tank Size: 75 liters (20 gallons) for one adult; larger tanks preferred for multiple specimens
• Ideal Temperature: 16–20°C (60–68°F) — avoid temperatures above 22°C (72°F)
• pH Range: 6.5–8.0
• Water Hardness: 7–14 dGH
• Temperament: Calm and solitary; avoid keeping with fish that may nip their gills or small tankmates that may be eaten. Prefer low flow and dim lighting.

Diet (Carnivorous / Omnivorous Tendencies)
Diet should include:

• Live or frozen foods such as earthworms, bloodworms, and blackworms

• Sinking carnivore pellets formulated for amphibians or carnivorous fish

• Occasional treats like small pieces of shrimp or lean fish

Feed 2–3 times per week; remove uneaten food promptly to maintain water quality.

Appearance
Distinctive Features:

• Salamander-like body with feathery external gills extending from each side of the head

• Wide mouth giving a “smiling” appearance

• Color morphs include wild type (dark with speckles), leucistic (pale with pink gills), albino, golden, and melanoid

• Retains larval features (neoteny) throughout life—unlike most amphibians, it does not metamorphose into a terrestrial form
