  • Propagation: Stem cuttings

  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast

🌱 Care Notes

  • Leaf Texture & Appearance: Ludwigia natans has opposite, elongated, lance-shaped leaves that are typically green, but under high light and good CO₂ conditions, they can develop reddish or bronze hues, especially on the top leaves. The plant can display a bushy or spreading growth habit, depending on whether it's grown submerged or floating on the surface.

  • Placement: This plant is commonly used in the background or midground of aquascapes. It is highly versatile, as it can be grown either as a submerged plant or as a floating plant that sends out its stems to the surface. It can also be used to create a floating carpet effect if left untrimmed.

  • Water Conditions: Prefers soft to moderately hard water with a temperature range of 22–28°C (72–82°F). It adapts well to a variety of conditions but will thrive with stable water parameters.

  • Lighting: Requires moderate to high light to bring out its best colors. The plant will grow more compact and develop reddish tones under bright lighting. If lighting is insufficient, the plant may become leggy and less vibrant.

  • CO₂: Recommended for optimal growth. While it can survive without CO₂ supplementation, it will grow much faster and show its full potential with added CO₂. Proper CO₂ levels will also support its vibrant red colors and healthy growth.

  • Fertilization: Regular liquid fertilization will help this plant grow efficiently, especially with an emphasis on micronutrients like iron and potassium. If planted in the substrate, root tabs can also provide essential nutrients for strong root growth.

  • Propagation: Ludwigia natans is easy to propagate through stem cuttings. Simply cut the top portion of a healthy stem and replant it in the substrate. New roots will quickly form, and the cutting will grow into a new plant. The plant may also spread by side shoots or runners from the base.

  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast. This plant is known for its ability to fill in space in aquascapes quickly. If left unchecked, it can spread rapidly and require regular pruning to maintain its shape and prevent it from overtaking the tank.
