Species Profile

  • Scientific Name: Corydoras pygmaeus
  • Common Name: Pygmy Corydoras
  • Adult Size: Around 0.75 to 1 inch (2 to 2.5 cm)
  • Life Expectancy: 3 to 5 years, sometimes longer with excellent care
  • Habitat: Native to the Madeira River basin in Brazil; found in slow-moving, shallow waters with leaf litter, fine sand, and dense vegetation

Diet & Nutrition

  • Omnivorous: Yes — thrives on a varied diet of sinking micro-pellets, fine flakes, baby brine shrimp, micro worms, and other small live or frozen foods. Will occasionally graze on biofilm and algae.

Appearance

  • Very small, slender body with silver-gray coloration
  • Horizontal black stripe running from snout to tail
  • Slightly translucent fins with minimal markings
  • Males are slightly slimmer; females are rounder and larger, especially when carrying eggs

Distinctive Features

  • One of the few Corydoras species that frequently swims in midwater as well as along the bottom
