 - Life Expectancy: 10–15 years (with proper care)
 - Habitat: Slow-moving rivers, backwaters, and floodplain lakes in the Amazon Basin; prefers warm, soft, slightly acidic waters with lots of submerged wood and vegetation.

Eats a varied diet including high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, vegetables (zucchini, peas, spinach), and protein-rich foods like earthworms, bloodworms, and brine shrimp. Occasional treats of fruit are also enjoyed. 
Appearance
- Color: Base color ranges from olive green to golden yellow. Males typically develop a bright red/orange coloration on the upper gill plates and shoulders—hence the name “Red Shoulder.” Faint vertical bars across the body, more visible in juveniles or stressed fish.
 - Size: Robust, oval-shaped body with long dorsal and anal fins.
 
Distinctive Features
- Vibrant red/orange coloration on the shoulders in mature males (more muted in females).
 - One of the more peaceful large cichlids, making it suitable for semi-aggressive community setups.
 - Intelligent, responsive, and can recognize their keeper.
 - Shows parental care—pairs will guard and tend to their eggs and fry.
