  Eats a varied diet including high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, vegetables (zucchini, peas, spinach), and protein-rich foods like earthworms, bloodworms, and brine shrimp. Occasional treats of fruit are also enjoyed.

Appearance

• Color: Base color ranges from olive green to golden yellow. Males typically develop a bright red/orange coloration on the upper gill plates and shoulders—hence the name “Red Shoulder.” Faint vertical bars across the body, more visible in juveniles or stressed fish.
• Size: Robust, oval-shaped body with long dorsal and anal fins.

Distinctive Features

• Vibrant red/orange coloration on the shoulders in mature males (more muted in females).
• One of the more peaceful large cichlids, making it suitable for semi-aggressive community setups.
