Species Profile
- Scientific Name: Neritina sp.
- Common Name: Tire Track Nerite Snail (also sometimes called Zebra Nerite, depending on the exact pattern)
- Adult Size: 2.5–3 cm (1–1.2 inches)
- Life Expectancy: 1 to 2 years in captivity

Habitat: Native to brackish and freshwater estuaries and rivers in Southeast Asia and Africa. Prefers hard surfaces like rocks, driftwood, or submerged roots where algae accumulate.
Tank Requirements
- Minimum Tank Size: 5 gallons (19 liters), more space preferred if keeping multiple snails
- Ideal Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)
- pH Range: 7.0–8.5
- Water Hardness: 6–18 dGH (medium to hard water is ideal for shell health)
- Temperament: Extremely peaceful. Does not harm fish, plants, or invertebrates. An excellent addition to a peaceful community tanks.
Diet & Nutrition

Omnivorous: Primarily herbivorous/algae eater.
- Feeds mostly on biofilm, soft algae, and diatoms
- Supplement with algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach), or specially formulated snail food if natural algae is scarce
- Will not eat live plants
Appearance
- Shell: Dome-shaped shell with a striking pattern resembling tire treads or zigzag stripes. Colors vary from golden brown to dark brown or black with contrasting stripes.
- Body: Usually dark grey to black with two small tentacles and a firm operculum ("trapdoor")
- Size: Up to 3 cm in diameter when fully grown

- Excellent Algae Control: Among the best algae-eating snails; effective on glass, rocks, and decorations
- Non-Reproductive in Freshwater: While they lay small white eggs, they do not hatch in freshwater, preventing overpopulation
- Operculum Protection: Closes tightly when threatened, providing excellent defense
