  • Common Name: Yellow Peacock Cichlid, Sunshine Peacock
  • Adult Size: 4–5 inches (10–13 cm)
  • Life Expectancy: 6–10 years with good care
  • Habitat: Native to Lake Malawi, specifically around the Nkhomo Reef. Prefers sandy substrates with scattered rocks where it can sift for food and claim small territories.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 55 gallons (for a male with 2–3 females or a mixed community)
  • Ideal Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)

    • Less aggressive than most Mbuna
    • Males can be territorial but are generally peaceful compared to other Lake Malawi cichlids
    • Best kept with other Aulonocara or Haps of similar temperament — avoid aggressive Mbuna

Diet & Nutrition

    • Naturally sifts through sand for invertebrates
    • In captivity: feed high-quality cichlid pellets, spirulina flakes, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and blanched vegetables
